"It's been a long time since we've seen a documentary like
this.
A truly poetic and visually stunning impressionistic doc, Last
Thoughts is a sparse diary of fragmentary recollections of the filmmaker's grandfather, who spent the depression years hopping freight trains and doing what he could to survive. A simple audio tape recorded before his death provides the backbone, while director Henry spent a year on the road retracing his travels and 'looking for echoes of his experience in the contemporary landscape'.
Rather than the images reflecting the story, the film is structured
as part photo essay and part dream. The photography is remarkable
and resonant and demonstrates a real artist's eye——— the
clarity and composition is really something else as it drifts
from place to place, just like those that populate the stories.
