Werner Herzog's film The
Great
Ecstasy of the Woodcarver Steiner is truly one
of the greatest ski films ever (btw, you can now buy Herzog's entire collection
of
documentaries and shorts from the Werner
Herzog Film, it's remarkable). Herzog himself was a ski jumper as
a teenager before he turned to filmmaking full time, so his passion for this
sport of flight and space
is
clearly on display in his portrait of Swiss ski jumping champion Walter
Steiner. Several scenes of his jumps were shot with high-speed cameras and are
shown
in breathtaking
ultra
slow-motion.
