Kayo Dot started off over ten years ago and were called gothic. Then they released a record on downtown NYC label Tzadik and were called avant-garde. After that, Robotic Empire picked them up and Kayo Dot were called post-hardcore. Now they have an upcoming release on Hydra Head Records whose cast of collaborators includes musicians from Burning Witch (slow ass heavy sludge), Behold… the Arctopus (fleet-ass atonal sorcery), and Les Claypool's band, Flying Frog Brigade. Wtf?

Tonight's show is the Northeast premiere of Kayo Dot's new suite, Blue Lambency Downward, so be prepared to witness a full set of new and unreleased music. The new band consists of a cadre of clarinet, tenor sax, and flute, plus synth and mellotron, violin, bells, gongs, Rhodes piano, drumset, electric guitar, and voice. KD haven't gigged locally since 2006, so this concert is a particularly special occasion; to add to its illustriousness, local filmmaker Yuko Sueta has cooked up a gloomy and psyched-out visual universe to interact with the performance. Dysrhythmia axe-man Kevin Hufnagel provides a prologue of starry and submersive solo guitar. For a quick description: Kayo Dot's appeal typically reaches fans of new music, tenebrous psychedelia, and vintage prog a la King Crimson.

Kevin Hufnagel has been playing the guitar for 19 years and is perhaps
best known for his work in progressive instrumental rock band
Dysrhythmia (Relapse Records) and guitar-as-wall-of-sound duo Byla.
Currently, he has written an album's worth of solo acoustic guitar
material inspired by everything from John Cage's prepared piano works,
to the classical/jazz guitar stylings of Ralph Towner. Tonight will be
his first time performing as a solo artist.
