Anticipate showcase for release
of Mark Templeton's Inland

Anticipate celebrates the release of Mark Templeton's newest album, Inland, with a show that represents a cross section of the label's output. Joining Templeton, whose electro-acoustic wanderings bring him to NYC from Montreal, is Italy's Nicola Ratti, whose quiet, architectural, guitar/voice driven music is a perfect complement. Label head Ezekiel Honig will be rounding out the audio portion of the evening with a softly rhythmic performance of fragmented melodies and physical textures. Joshue Ott, the resident visualist for Anticipate, will be playing alongside all the musicians, utilizing his superDraw software to complete the space as only he can, bending line and color in a manner which is reactionary, reflexive and completely his own.

Mark Templeton:
Canadian artist Mark Templeton utilizes a background in acoustic music and instruments such as the guitar, banjo and accordion to compose electro-acoustic music using said instruments and a variety of effects processes. Since the release of his critically acclaimed Standing on a Hummingbird in 2007, his sound has been called "pastoral",”but also "painterly" in an attempt to describe how his instruments are crumbled and reconstructed into new forms; a process further developed and realized on his 2009 release, Inland.

Templeton's works have been commissioned by organizations of contemporary dance, film and audiovisual disciplines. His live performances have at times been accompanied by Edmonton-based experimental filmmaker aAron Munson's visuals. In 2009 this ongoing collaboration resulted in the release of M. Templeton & aA. Munson: Acre Loss on CD and DVD.

Templeton has performed at international festivals and alternative spaces such as MUTEK Festival (Montreal), Unsound Festival (Krakow), Eat This Festival (Utrecht), Galapagos (New York), Latitude 53 (Edmonton) and Suoni Per Il Popolo Festival (Montreal).

Nicola Ratti:


Nicola Ratti bases his music upon the search for a personal language that is capable of joining together basic song structure, electro-acoustic experimentation, and the use of sounds extracted from the environment in which we live, with a sensibility that ranges from improvisation to the almost artisanal construction of sound. The use of voice and words compete to create a result full of nuance and discovery within compositions which remain open to both formal and emotional points of view.

The search for descriptive methods through the use of sound, and the ability to create environment with sound by recognizing its territorial elements, are points where the activity of the musician and the architect converge. Through his work in both pursuits, Nicola Ratti has had the opportunity to engage with these themes in various exhibitions and events dealing with architectural and urban spaces.

In addition to his solo material, Nicola is currently working with Giuseppe Ielasi on the project entitled Bellows (released by Kning Disk), and with the Morriconian soundtrack-band Ronin. He has also collaborated in various live performances with Andrea Belfi, Dean Roberts, Oren Ambarchi and Phill Niblock.

Ezekiel Honig:


A New York City native, and founder/label manager for the Anticipate label, Ezekiel Honig concentrates on his idiosyncratic brand of emotively warm electronic-acoustic music. Using the loop as more of a tool than a rule, Honig paints outside the lines, nestling into a comfortable, shared space between muted techno, ambient and slowmotion house - using them as reference points from which to stray, rather than as steadfast frameworks. Drawing on the rich history of musique concrete, Honig looks to incorporate a material nature into his music by imbuing it with a host of field recording/found-sound sources in the search for a balance between digital software innovation and the physicality of the world around us. His music is one of contrast and contradiction, combining minimal, abstract tendencies with a core of timeless harmonics - pairing inviting, fuzzy chords with clunky and dirty "mishaps."

Joshue Ott:


Joshue Ott is a multi-disciplined media artist and designer. Over the last couple of years, his attentions have been largely devoted to creating superDraw, software intended for live visual performance. With superDraw, Ott's interest has been to create a program that could produce visual art, but behave more like a musical instrument, to be learned, practiced and wielded just like a guitar, saxophone or laptop. To this end, the program is fitted with a tablet interface for drawing in real time, enabling a higher degree of physical interaction with the person using it, and arguably, a higher degree of interactive expression.

Performing with superDraw, Ott bends lines and movements - creating improvised hand drawn forms which rest in a comfortable space between minimalism, psychedelia and curious simplicity. With the subdued use of color amidst stark black and white, Ott's visual work complements the music perfectly, highlighting contrast and maneuvering through moment driven change. By taking advantage of the immediacy of on the spot art, made outside the computer, and transferred through it, Ott is able to unite the worlds of the physical and digital to make a perfect union of human control and computer fueled chance.
