The Great Republic of Rough and Ready plays American folk music, reimagined and reconstructed. The sound is lonesome and haunting, quiet but intense. They have performed songs both familiar and obscure by artists such as Ma Rainey, Mississippi John Hurt and Hank Williams, creating a body of songs that mixes the spirit of original folk recordings with their own compositional style. The Great Republic of Rough and Ready is led by singer Elissa Spencer of Nevada City, CA and guitarist Sam Stein of Pawtucket, RI, who have been performing together for over seven years. Although the band is based in NYC, it takes its name from the California gold mining town that briefly seceded from the United States in 1850, in order to avoid taxation and prohibition.

Otto Hauser, percussionist for Vetiver and Espers, plays new music with members of both groups.
