In the midst of Michael Bloomberg’s controversial third bid for mayor of New York City, The Promise of New York, an absorbing documentary film that combines irreverent humor with thought-provoking political discourse, proves to be a very timely call for citizen involvement in local politics.
The film follows a blogger turned stand-up comic, an obsessive political gadfly and a high-school math teacher as they compete against each other and arch rival incumbent Michael Bloomberg for the post of New York City mayor. As these ordinary citizens take politics into their own hands, The Promise of New York explores the meaning of democracy and the identity of a city with hilarious irreverence and thought-provoking sensitivity.
A Q&A session with filmmaker Raul Barcelona will follow the screening.
Finally, a film that lets us see the other candidates: regular guys who have had enough, can't take it anymore, and decide to take on billionaire mayor Michael Bloomberg in the rough-and-tumble New York City elections. If everyone watched this film, we would have a better chance at saving our democracy.
