The
Fun Years
A duo of turntable and baritone guitar, The Fun Years have disguised
their instruments with atmospheric textures comprised of obscure
samples and blissful repetition. The result is a stream
of audio magma, filled with dreamy sound washes and subtle phrases
that effortlessly tumble over one another. As artists
such as Stars of the Lid and William Basinski achieve, The Fun
Years use time as a muscial tool without pretense. They
concoct thick layers of rich drone and underlying harmony that
artfully conjure notions of memory, space and the subconscious.
While Isaac Sparks’ sampling creates a thick haze of pops
and crackles from abstracted vinyl recordings, Ben Recht’s
guitar work of arpeggios and open tunings draws the listener into
the world of The Fun Years. As a live act, their show with
Geoff Mullen and Tim Hecker in 2005 was single-handedly responsible
for their signing to Barge Recordings. With little arm-twisting,
The Fun Years accepted and landed the opening track on the "INNATURE"
compilation, accompanying tracks by Tim Hecker, Polmo Polpo and
others.
Geoff
Mullen
Currently hailing from Providence, RI, Geoff Mullen is a guitarist
/ sound manipulator was recently featured on the Barge Recordings
"INNATURE" compilation and has released solo albums
on various labels including Last Visible Dog, Keith Fullerton
Whitman’s Entschuldigen label and Geoff’s own Rare
Youth label. Repeated listens slowly reveal his natural
ability to maintain a balance between control and freedom: constantly
suggesting loose composition but managing to keep the listener
completely focused on each ring of his guitar, or banjo for that
matter. Open spaces are attacked, whirling with windy melodic
gestures. Geoff's live performances are variations on his
recorded material, incorporating improvisation and exploration
while building tension with dynamics and atmosphere. He
has toured extensively and has performed along side such artists
as James Blackshaw, Fursaxa, and Cul De Sac's Glenn Jones.
Barge
Recordings
Barge Recordings is an NYC-based record label run by Dave Nardone
and Ian Lawrence. Founded in 2005, Barge is a product of
two gentlemen with a driving passion for sharing music and sound.
Barge fosters the concept of exposing new artists who continually
challenge and defy the conventions of music. Stay tuned
for a vinyl LP by Geoff Mullen, as well as Riptide: a 12"
vinyl split series for the adventurous, all in the works for spring/summer
2007.
