We first saw Baye Kouyate
at Zebulon when he sat in with the phenomenal, experimental trio,
Eye Contact. It was one of those nights where your assumptions
about music are blown way out of the water. To witness Baye on
the talking drum is to hear polyrhythms ricochet against overtones
and collide with undertones until you'd swear this could not just
be percussion. And it's not.
of Africa TV described him this way...
"Baye Kouyate is a young griot from Mali. At the Mafrika
Festival, he sang two songs; an hommage to Ali Farka Toure and
'Mali Fadjo', a tradional song from Mali, telling the story of
Mali the hippopotamus and Fadjo the hunter.
Baye Kouyate is also a master of the talking drum and tours with
Kora virtuoso Mamadou
Baye Koutate regularly performs around the corner at Zebulon
Cafe in Brooklyn."
Tonight we will be joined by fellow Malinese musician Tougarake.
