A veteran
of the intimate theater, Katie Chastain began her life in show-business
as an orphan under the watchful eye of a gypsy organ grinder.
By the age of four, Miss Chastain's voice had an almost magical
ability which was known to make weathered seamen cry.
The child began performing in church halls, carnival tents and
parlour rooms across the continent and soon drew the interest
of Naumeni Yetachi, the infamous master of the Jakarta Illusionista
Circus. In a deal struck behind closed doors, the young girl
was whisked away with the Illusianista troupe, and before long,
she began drawing large crowds across Europe.
Katie grew increasingly uncomfortable with the growing crowds
and inflated spectacle of the big top. She spent many months
in a relentless cycle of road-weary performance, where her only
friends were a worn book of Russian poetry and a sapient dragon
by the name of Mr. Peaches.
As a slave to the art that she loved, Katie eventually mustered
up the courage to escape. One night on the outskirts of Budapest,
before the penultimate performance for the reigning political
party, Miss Chastain cut off her signature fire-red hair and
donned a corduroy juggler's suit. When the spotlight shone for
Katie's show-closing number, the audience was met with an empty
stage of silence.
For the next ten years, Katie's whereabouts were unknown, and
not a single note was heard. Rumors circulated that she performed
behind a veil in the freezing winters of the old Russian republic,
but in early 2007 she was spotted on a steamer vessel bound for
New York.
Tonight, marks the return of the
accidental artist, Miss Katie Chastain, performing with her coterie
of players in our unique white-box theater. Lean in close as
Chastain's beautiful, almost broken-down voice recaptures a journey
of snapshots and close-ups, exposing hang-nail and kiss; hesitation
and blush. On a canvas that is simultaneously lush and threadbare,
beat driven and lyrical, join us inside the intimate stage of
an enchanted music box.
