HANDMADE: an evening
of cameraless films
Curated by Greg Zinman
Film without the photography. Spanning over 80 years of avant-garde
production, HANDMADE is a celebration of alternative moviemaking
practices, focusing on beautiful and disturbing cameraless films.
The images seen onscreen result from filmmakers painting, drawing,
and scratching directly onto celluloid, one frame at a time. Other
handmade methods include manipulating already existing footage
via chemical processes and natural decomposition. The program
will include examples of paint-on-film by Stan Brakhage, Len Lye,
and Bårbel Neubauer, direct animations by Mary Ellen Bute,
Ted Nemeth, Norman McLaren and Richard Reeves, treated found footage
experiments by Jürgen Reble and Naomi Uman, and decayed cinema
by Bill Morrison.
