It's Oprah's world, we just live in it, dreaming
she'll gift us a Pontiac. We see her show most often while waiting
in line at the Post Office or in the waiting room at a DMV or
municipal building. And it's at those moments that we are convinced
that a massive Cult of Oprah exists and we will, most likely,
always feel excluded.
She is a master priestess and her peerless cultivation of American
confessionals has made her worth over $1 Billion. She owns a $50
million estate in Santa Barbara.
The act of watching Oprah can be a harrowing glimpse into a collective
looking glass. And what we see in her show and our culture often
seems profoundly psychotic. We stare at each hourlong car wreck,
enthralled, complicit, and disturbed. There are moments when we
might believe she's on our side, that she is fighting for people
like us. But then, mostly, we feel a stronger sense that we are
midway through our very personal, and yet, very collective lobotomy.
And what if she's made reading and reading clubs a popular pastime?
Can we not give her that, Mr. Franzen?
No, not really. It's not enough.
With all her cultural power and deep, deep pockets, we expect
more. Making hundreds of millions of dollars off stories of misery,
half-redeemed lives, and semi-makeovers may be more shameful than
even your bestselling lies, Mr. Frey. A simple tithing would be
