Shot x Shot is an improvisational acoustic quartet from Philadelphia
performing original compositions steeped in jazz tradition, but
with experimental sensibilities. On its self-titled debut, the
group showcases its compositional dynamism and transcendental
vibrancy creating a unique balanced sound that is often missing
in improvisational jazz. With Dan Scofield (alto) and Bryan Rogers
(tenor) on dueling saxophone ballasted by Dan Capecchi (drums)
and Matt Engle (bass), the bands multi-dimensional, layered sound
relies on each musicians unique contribution.
Va Va China, on the other hand, electrifies its all-improvised
shows and seeks to compose "tunes" on stage. For them,
the show is the act of composition not the compositions themselves.
The blending of acoustic drums and horns with electric bass and
ambience provides the group with an undeniable immediacy that
both acknowledges its jazz/rock/electronic music influence and
then quickly overwhelms it. Definitely recommended for fans of
DJ Spooky, Tortoise, or the electric Miles Davis. Look for Shot
x Shot and Va Va China to collaborate at some point in the show
and live visuals mixed by Dr. Zero to round off the performance.
