Seminal surf films through the decades and the Hollywood flipside

When Hollywood makes a surf film you can feel the ooze of cheese.
When surfers make a surf film you can smell the wax.

For these five nights, we will simultaneously screen two films from each decade starting with the '60s and ending with the '00s.

With each screening, we will show the surfer-made film on 2 screens and the Hollywood film on the other two screens.

The soundtrack will be a mix of both films; but the dominant sound will be from the surfer-made soundtrack
.

for all nights...
Admission: Free

Endless Summer vs. Gidget: The '60s

Endless Summer follows two surfers around the world in their classic search for the "perfect wave". Gidget follows Sandra Dee through her discovery of surfing and, sigh, love.

Big Wednesday vs. Morning of the Earth: The '70s

Yes, Gary Busey plays a surf dude. And yes, Big Wednesday delivers a story of surfing and friendship. The director, John Milius, would go on to make Conan the Barbarian two years later.

Morning of the Earth, on the other hand, is one of the those sublime surf films that constructs, "a fantasy of surfers living in three unspoilt lands [Australia, Bali, and Hawaii] and playing in nature's oceans". Required viewing for anyone who lives

Sunday, June 4
North Shore vs. The Green Iguana: The '80s

I love the tagline for North Shore, "On a small stretch of coastline as powerful as a man's will, Rick Kane came to surf the big waves. He found a woman who would show him how to survive, and a challenge unlike any other." Suh-weet!!!

Along with Bunyip Dreaming and Sik Joy, The Green Iguana established Jack McCoy as a major surf filmmaker.

Point Break vs. Momentum I & II: The '90s

Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze hunk it up together, respectively as the FBI agent and the Zen surfer dude in Point Break, Kathryn Bigelow's surf melodrama.

Momentum I & II exposed a new generation of surf icons, including Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, Taylor Knox, Shane Dorian and Ross Williams.

Blue Crush vs. Campaign: The '00s

Kate Bosworth stars with her surf buds Michelle Rodriguez and Sanoe Lake. Ultimately, Blue Crush is the story of a dedicated surfer who falls for a star football player.

But for the serious surf fanatic, Taylor Steele's Campaign
lets it rip without the syrupy subplots.
