Ze¢ Luis Quintet
Tonight is a Pre-Release Showcase for their new album, Caiapó.
The new album, Caiapó, is an infectious recording
with solid Brazilian grooves and very special guests produced
by Jeremy Adelman and Zé Luis.
Funked up Brazilian music contaminated with a fusion of jazz,
African beats, electronica and Samba. Featuring Ze Luis (composer
"En Route to Baghdad"; arranger Ivy, Brazilian Girls,
musical director Bebel Gilberto, band member Caetano Veloso, Vinicius
Cantuaria, Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil)
Musicians: Zé Luis, woodwinds. Richard
Padron, guitar. Nanny Assis, percussion. Leco Reis, acoustic bass.
Aaron Turston, drums.

A Girl From Rio - Yui
Natsuyagi
Yui Natsuyagi is a freelance photo-journalist based in Brooklyn.
A Girl From Rio is a documentary photo-essay
about the life of a little girl Rafaela, living in one of the
largest favelas in Rio de Janeiro - Rocinha. Shoot in two segments
three years apart, Yui documents a young girls transformation
and captures the light and hope in the eyes of a child.
A Girl from Rio was partially funded
by a Puffin Foundation Grant. Yui gained access to the kids in
the favela with the support of Dreams
Can Be Foundation. Dreams Can Be, based in Rio de Janeiro,
is a non-profit organization and Brazilian NGO dedicated to aiding
impoverished youth.
Culturechoke – Aline
Motta
Aline Motta is a Visual Artist based in Rio. Aline spent several
years in New York City as a student, filmmaker and founding member
of the Feijoada crew. Upon her return home, Aline saw Brazilian
culture through different eyes. Aline’s photo log is a visual
diary of her post America journey into Brazilian life.
Back to the Beat, a documentary in progress
– Willis Baxter Johnson
Back to the Beat explores the relationship between American
and Brazilian music, tracing the connection to indigenous African
beats that spread with the Diaspora. This is the debut screening
of the Trailer for this work in progress, beautifully shot by
James Ball. With Ze Luis, Arto Lindsay, Mauro Refosco/Forro in
the Dark and Jamyz Nylon.
About Feijoada:
Willis Baxter Johnson, a film, video and event producer/director,
founded Feijoada - Brazilian Music and Art series in late 2002.
Feijoada has put on shows at Galapagos Art Space (in residence
w/ various artists - Ze Luis, Dende, Mosquitos, Helio Serodio,
Forro in the Dark), the Cutting Room (w/ Grammy Winner Arto Lindsay)
and the Knitting Factory (multi-media event for MoMA and Cinema
Tropical). Shows had site-specific treatments and installations
created by Willis. In addition with Cinema Tropical, Feijoada
programmed live music for outdoor screenings at The Socrates Sculpture
Garden and Queens Museum.
Feijoada is hyper sensory stimulation happening across media platforms
- live music, DJ, video, film, photography, painting, sculpture
and more. Currently, Willis is shopping the pilot for a food and
lifestyle television series, Cooking
Lounge.
Other visual work by Willis can be seen in a collaboration with
artist, Shiri Sandler in Home
Base, an exhibition of Brooklyn based Israeli, American
and Polish Artists. March 1st – 12th.
